Expert Panel on the 2022-23 Budget and Prospects for the Indian Economy - Online Event

Indian economy suffered a sharp decline in 2020 due to Covid-19-induced lock-downs. Its GDP fell 7.3% that year. But it has recovered handsomely the following year, growing 9.2%. The IMF projects India as the fastest growing major economy in the next two years placing its growth forecasts at 9% in 2022 and 7% in 2023. In this backdrop, India's Finance Minister presented India's Budget for fiscal year 2022-23 on February 1 2022.  How do experts see this budget and what are the prospects for the Indian economy in the short to medium run? To dissect these questions, Raj Center will be hosting a panel discussion on February 10, 2022 from 9:30am to 10:45am ET (8:00pm to 9:15pm IST). Speaker Biographies:

Sajjid Z. Chinoy is J.P. Morgan’s Chief India Economist and also a Member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Advisory Council. He has previously worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and McKinsey & Company.  He has authored several publications on the Indian economy including co-editing a book on Indian economic reform: “Reforming India’s External, Fiscal and Financial Policies” with Anne O. Krueger. He received his Ph.D. in economics at Stanford University in 2001.  

Naushad Forbes is the Co - Chairman of Forbes Marshall, India's leading Steam Engineering and Control Instrumentation firm.  He is Chairman, Ananta Aspen Center and was President of CII for 2016 – 17. He was an occasional Lecturer and Consulting Professor at Stanford University from 1987 to 2004 where he developed courses on Technology in Newly Industrializing Countries. He received his Bachelors, Masters and PhD Degrees from Stanford University. His book, The Struggle and the Promise: Restoring India's Potential has been published recently by Harper Collins, India.

Akash Prakash is the Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Amansa Capital Pte. Ltd., a Singapore based India focused fund. Prior to establishing Amansa Capital in 2006, he was Director of Investment, Tamasek Holdings (India), Before joining Tamasek, Akash spent six years as Portfolio Mnagaer for GIC, the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation where he managed US, Pan-Asian and Indian investment portfolios. Akash received his MBA from the elite Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Arvind Panagariya is a Professor of Economics, Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy and Director, Raj Center in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. In the past, he has been Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, Government of India, India's G-20 Sherpa and Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank. He has authored or edited more than 20 books. His latest book is My Father: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man has been published by Harper Collins, India. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Princeton University.
